Vancouver Water
Treatment Systems
Metro Vancouver has worked to make its mountain water gentler on pipes, but the plumbing inside your building is still yours to protect. Hytec treats the water after it passes your property line, so the pipes you already have can keep doing their job.

Protecting your plumbing starts with the water
Metro Vancouver has made changes to its water treatment process, raising pH and alkalinity using calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) and carbon dioxide at the Seymour Capilano Filtration Plant, and sodium carbonate (soda ash) and carbon dioxide at the Coquitlam Water Treatment Plant.
While these changes have made the water less corrosive, Vancouver’s water remains very soft, and building plumbing can still be vulnerable to corrosion over time.
Within Vancouver, every building responds to water differently, which influences how its plumbing ages. Inside a building, the same water meets decades-old copper, hot-water tanks, heat exchangers, and recirculation loops, where temperature, water velocity, and existing plumbing conditions all influence how it behaves. Even with improved municipal treatment, corrosion and mineral deposits can remain concerns within a building’s plumbing system.
Hytec’s on-site AquaPlan addresses these risks directly. Rather than waiting for a depreciation report to recommend replacement, we intervene at the water level, helping extend the usable life of existing pipes by years or even decades, depending on conditions. All treatment products are NSF 60 certified, our equipment is NSF 61 certified, and Hytec holds NSF certification as a company.
Here’s what makes up
a Hytec System:
how it works
Hytec installs a compact treatment unit that ties into your building’s domestic water supply, including a flow meter, dosing pumps, a sampling port, automatic shutoff functionality, and online monitoring. The meter tracks usage and signals the pumps to introduce corrosion-control treatment proportional to demand, helping maintain accurate dosing whether the building is at peak use or overnight low flow.
A downstream sampling port allows treatment levels to be checked, while automated controls provide additional safeguards for the dosing system. Everything sits on a spill tray, and a backflow prevention valve keeps treated water from re-entering the municipal supply. Installation typically takes about eight hours, with minimal disruption to residents.
Hardware
Each Hytec installation is built from the same core components: a Backflow RPB Valve for municipal safety compliance, an ultrasonic flow meter with no moving parts for long-term reliability, dual digital dosing pumps that communicate directly with the meter, a stainless steel injection manifold made in Vancouver, and double-walled product tanks with tamper-proof locking lids. All equipment is covered under a full-term warranty for the life of your AquaPlan.
Building around your system’s water
There’s no universal treatment product because there’s no universal water. Hytec tailors its treatment approach to your building’s specific water chemistry and plumbing configuration, selecting a formulation designed to support optimal system performance.
Each program is configured at installation and refined over time based on ongoing testing and monitoring. The underlying infrastructure remains consistent across Hytec installations, but the treatment strategy is customized to each building’s needs.
Why
Hytec
Proven Results. Decades as the category originator, protecting 750+ buildings across Canada, including Rogers Arena, BC Housing, and Burnaby Hospital.
Science Built for Your Building’s Water. A treatment program customized to your building’s specific chemistry, not a one-size-fits-all product.
Always-On Visibility. 24/7 remote monitoring provides continuous performance verification without allowing remote access to the treatment system.
A Partner for the Life of the Building. Ongoing service and optimization are built into the relationship from day one.
Water Treatment Products FAQs
Does the treatment fix leaks that already exist?
At an early stage, the protective coating can fix divots that will turn into leaks. However, the treatment is preventive, not structural. Existing leaks need to be located and physically repaired; Hytec’s role is preventing future ones.
Is Hytec’s treatment system safe?
Yes. Everything used is NSF certified and consistent with EPA and Health Canada guidance. Orthophosphate treatment is standard municipal practice in cities including Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and New York.
